Goya "Crazy like a genius" - lecture summary
Born at March 30th 1746, Francisco Goya was a modernist painter. Goya came up with his style very early in his career. Madrid was the most important city for Goya in his life and that's where he was painting low class Spanish people for royal family. After he became deaf in 1792, he started to paint sad and strange images full of brutality. They were representing dark places where terrible things happened.
Goya started his artistic training under the eye of Jose Luzan in Zaragoza. In 1771 he took his first commission in cathedral for frescoes.
Later on, in 1775, Goya started to paint at a court in Madrid. During 17 years spent on this project, he has drawn around 60 cartoons that were later translated into tapestry in Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara. These paintings were representing contemporary life of lower as well as higher class Spanish people.
After becoming deaf in 1792, Goya's art started to change. His work became darker and sadder. Witches, ghosts and fantastic creatures became the subject of his art. In 1799 he started painting the family portrait of Charles IV which was a large-scale painting and took him 2 years to complete. During the war against Napoleon, Goya was painting the various scenes of suffer and documenting Spain at these hard times. 'Disasters of war' is a series of paintings Goya has executed between years 1810 and 1820 depicting the struggles Spain was going through in order to fight its independence from France back.
Between years 1820 and 1823, Goya completed a series of fresco at his small country house after his work at Madrid was done. These paintings are being called 'Black Paintings' these days due to their horrifying scenes and heavy emotional meaning.
In 1824 Goya left Spain and moved to Bordeaux seeking medical help.
